Spoonflower Weekly Design Challenge: Re-Imagined Damask Wallpaper

So, I've gotten back in the saddle, so to speak, with designing patterns after a loooong hiatus from digital designing and social media in general. I realized recently that my last IG post was from my daughter's first day of school... 2019! Yup, a year and a half ago. BUT, I have not been sitting on my hands, I've actually been keeping myself very busy, trying new things, practicing old things, making stuff - some good, some not so good, some surprising and wonderful. You can scroll through the pics on my homepage to get an idea of what I've been up to.

But, now, on to the Spoonflower weekly design challenge. The theme for this week is "Re-imagined Damask ". Yes! This is right up my alley! And was specifically geared toward wallpaper, so the scale was going to be grand.

I was so excited that I got to work brainstorming and sketching. I knew I wanted to end up with something dark and dramatic, so I decided on luna moths at night featuring moon cycles and stars.

And here is the final design, built and colored in Illustrator.

I kept the colors in this version vibrant against the dark sky background to help it stand out amongst the sea of over 1,000 entries! You can vote here, but be warned, you might want to settle in to a comfortable chair with your favorite beverage because you're going to be scrolling through entries for a fair bit of time.

I also created a few subtler tone-on-tone colorways because if I was going to use this pattern on something for my home or to make into a dress, I would lean more towards a muted color palette. They also lend themselves toward the moonlit feel I was going for.

I had so many ideas while brainstorming, that I have a few more nontraditional damask patterns in the works. I've been wanting to work cranes and insects in to my patterns, both would make for very interesting damask patterns.

Here some of the untraditional damask patterns I've created in the past. All of these are available as custom printed fabric and home goods in my Spoonflower shop and most are also available in my Society6 shop as custom art prints, cell phone cases, shower curtains, sling chairs and dozens of other products.

This one is called Ghostly Squid Damask. I designed it for a previous Spoonflower challenge, oh maybe 6 or 7 years ago! It's still one of my favorites. It was the inspiration for my "Into the Deep" fabric collection with Michael Miller Fabrics.

Fabric above can be found in my Spoonflower shop here.

Pillow below is from my Society6 shop here.

"Sunken Damask" - one of the first designs I created for Spoonflower. Come to think of it, I think this was for a Spoonflower challenge, too. See it on Spoonflower here. Pillow is from Society6 here.

"Butterfly Damask" - Spoonflower fabric and pillow can be found here.

"Nature's Damask" - Fabric and pillow can be found here.

Can't forget Halloween! "Spooky Damask - Decay" - Fabric and pillow can be found here.

Good luck if you choose to brave voting, thanks for coming with me on this trip down memory lane. :)
